UNEVEN EXCHANGE: Israelis live in a tough neighborhood, surrounded by people who range from merely hostile to openly genocidal. With that in mind, I tend to think they should be given the benefit of the doubt even when they make decisions that seem dubious - as does the recent deal with Hezbollah, in which Israel released vicious and unrepentant terrorists in exchange for the remains of Israelis murdered by Hezbollah. Michael Oren writes that
by valuing each individual, alive or deceased, Israel is demonstrating its strength as a free and democratic society. Yet, by trading convicted terrorists for illegally abducted Israelis, Israel guarantees that similar kidnappings will occur in the future. Continued...

America's dependence on oil is its Achilles' heel in the battle against terrorism, a fact that has not escaped the terrorists. A catastrophic attack on key facilities would devastate the world economy, but disruptive attacks that fall short of that are also a powerful tool of asymmetric warfare.
